【空撮 北海道百名山】美瑛岳

美瑛岳（びえいだけ）は、北海道上川郡美瑛町に位置する標高2,052mの火山です。大
雪山国立公園に属しています。 石狩山地の十勝岳連峰のひとつで、火山としては主
峰の十勝岳より古く山名はアイヌ語で「油ぎった」を意味する「ピイエ」から来たも
ので、山からの硫黄が川に流れ込んで濁っていたことに由来します。 美瑛岳南面の
荒々しい爆裂火口から深いV字沢を形成し、美瑛川の支流であるポンピ沢（アバレ
川）の源頭となっています。 Mount Biei is a volcano with an elevation of
2,052 meters, located in the town of Biei within the Kamikawa District of
Hokkaido; it is part of Daisetsuzan National Park. It is one of the peaks in
the Tokachi Volcanic Group within the Ishikari Mountains. Geologically, it
predates the group's main peak, Mount Tokachi. Its name is derived from the
Ainu word *piie*-meaning "oily"-referring to the way sulfur runoff from the
mountain would cloud the river water. A deep V-shaped ravine descends from
the rugged explosion crater on the mountain's southern face, forming the
headwaters of Ponpi-zawa (also known as Abare-gawa), a tributary of the Biei River.
