雲仙岳は、長崎県島原半島の中央部に位置する活火山です。最高峰の平成新山（標高1,483m）や普賢岳（同1,359m）をはじめとする複数の山で構成されます。（平成新山は活発な火山活動のため立入禁止で、事実上は普賢岳が主峰として扱われています）もともとは雲仙ではなく「温泉（うんぜん）」とされていましたが、1934年に現在の名称に改められました。一帯は2009年に日本初の世界ジオパーク（島原半島ジオパーク）に認定されています。仁田峠をはじめ一帯は4月中旬～5月下旬にかけてミヤマキリシマの名所となり、多くの登山者や観光客が訪れます。登山は仁田峠を起点に普賢岳とともに雲仙三岳をなす妙見岳と国見岳を経て普賢岳に立ち、全国森林浴百選の薊谷を下る周回コースが中心となっています。
Unzendake is an active volcano located in the center of the Shimabara Peninsula, Nagasaki Prefecture. It consists of multiple mountains, including the highest peak, Heisei-Shinzan (1,483m above sea level) and Mt. Fugendake (1,359m above sea level). (Heisei-Shinzan is off-limits due to active volcanic activity, and Mt. Fugen is actually treated as the main peak.) Originally, it was called a "hot spring" rather than Unzen, but in 1934 it was changed to its current name. The name has been changed. The entire area was certified as Japan's first global geopark (Shimabara Peninsula Geopark) in 2009. The entire area, including Nita Pass, is a famous spot for A. japonica from mid-April to late May, and is visited by many climbers and tourists. The main route for climbing is a circular route starting from Nita Pass, passing through Mt. Myoken and Mt. Kunimi, which together with Mt. Fugen make up the Three Mountains of Unzen, then reaching Mt. Fugen and descending through Saidani, which has been selected as one of the top 100 forest bathers in Japan.
